The 2017 budget was one of huge importance for the renewable energy industry. Ireland is currently under pressure from the EU to reach the 2020 target for renewable energy (16%). The target for heating and cooling is to grow energy usage from renewables to 12%. Ireland has grown this figure to 8.6% over the past few years but has plenty more to go to reach the target. If Ireland should fail to reach the EU renewable-energy targets, we will be forced to pay a fine of €75 million each year.
€17 million worth of funds was allocated to the RHI in the 2017 budget, this is an attempt from the government to encourage people to invest in renewable energies for heating and cooling, both domestically and commercially.
It is understood that the scheme will cover additional costs of generating heat from renewable sources by providing a payment on a ‘per unit of energy produced’ basis. Meaning renewable energy will become even more cost efficient for both homeowners and businesses.
